Loni Specter, born Bronx, N.Y. during the McCarthy
hearings on un-American activities.
Milestones: at the age of seven, while watching "The Lawrence Welk Show" with Grandma Ethyl, Loni became enamoured with the guitar. (he is still
trying to figure Out what the strings are for).
At age nine Loni invents the skateboard! While riding His homemade scooter Loni rear-ended an ice-cream truck,
knocking the wooden crate off the front of the 2x4 wooden beam.
With no tools to facilitate
repairs, he was forced to leave the crate portion where it lay and proceeded
to balance himself on the metal skate-wheeled monster with no hands!
the rest is history. Hell on wheels-- Loni
sets new Pierce College to Topanga Beach, record on his trusty Yamaha twostroke
motorcycle. His canyon carving crazy buddies bestow the moniker "if God
wanted man to go slow, he wouldn't have given us black beauties and gasoline!"
The year 1969- Loni goes to
"Newport '69" in Northridge California (pre Woodstock) there he sneaks onto the
sound and light platform high above the crowd. Later that evening, the guy who handles the follow spot light has to take a "dump" just as the headliner is about to go on stage.(we had been pissing in empty wine jugs all day, avoiding the crush of the crowd) the lighting guy gives Loni a crash course in carbon arc adjusting and abandons the "super trouper" spotlight to Loni---just as Jimi Hendrix hits opening chords to
"Foxy Lady".
1972 Loni trades his triumph motorcycle for a pentax camera
for the day. He hops a bus chartered by his pals at KPPC radio in Pasadena
and heads off to chino prison to shoot pictures of BB King. Within three
months he has sold pictures to "Rolling Stone", "Crawdaddy", and the "LA Free
Press" he decides to become a photographer.
1979 Loni is looking for pretty girls to photograph for an
ad for a hair salon in the San Fernando Valley. One of his regular girls
brings along a friend to the session. Long dark hair, classic ballerina like
beauty.
Her name is Demi Moore.
He invites her to return for her first ever solo studio session, another
night. She brings her fiancée Freddy Moore (you
can't win 'em all). We all become fast friends and Loni shoots Freddy and Demi's wedding and numerous pictures of
The Kats, Nu-Kats and Boy Next Door, and after a while writes some outside tunes with Freddy and the gang (1983) "Tatoo", "Waltzing Through Life", "Show You How", and more that were performed a few times (See: BFM Live at Wilshire Fine Arts)
.
Flash to---- 1997- Loni is now a
family guy with two kids a wife of 19 years (or is that a 19 year old wife?
Oops-- dreaming again), one motorcycle, three skateboards, and 12 guitars.
Oh yea, he still shoots photos and he still writes songs. Loni On The Kats.
"Meeting Freddy Moore and seeing The Kats live for the first time was almost as
exciting as the time I faked my way backstage At The Forum in Inglewood
California to see "Blind Faith" and wound up sitting in a booth, drinking beers
with Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton in the Forum Club after the concert. The Kats were a close second as far as I'm concerned".
More to come ..I hope!
