THE JANUARY SONG (A CANÇãO DE JANEIRO)

Used with permission Roused from a deep and wintry dream
Two bells before the morning light
The smell of tar and flaming heat
The city burning in the night
I threw on some slippers as I stumbled
Outside
'cause I knew I would never regain my senses
'Til I proved that she was still
Well and alive
I wound my way down to her street
Her place was charred but it survived
I saw her swaddled in her sheets
Her man was waiting by her side.
One sightless backward glance
At her gifted beauty
A dark wind is blowing
The Universe is burning
The panther turns and slips away
I lay here haunted in my room
The years roll on, but I survive
Sometimes I glimpse her in the streets
Could I have been there by her side?
